ruta graveolens herb tincture

Ruta graveolens herb tincture is an herbal fragrance agent derived from rue herb with a distinctive herbal odor used mainly in perfumery under specific safety guidelines.

General Material Description

Ruta graveolens herb tincture is an extract derived from the fresh or dried herb of Ruta graveolens, commonly known as rue or herb-of-grace. This tincture presents a distinctive herbal odor profile characterized as green and aromatic. Synonyms include rue tincture, ruta hortensis herb tincture, and Ruta graveolens L. herb tincture. It is classified as a natural plant-based fragrance ingredient and documented in chemical databases such as PubChem. The tincture is prepared via solvent extraction of rue herb, a plant traditionally cultivated in Mediterranean and temperate regions. Its application focuses on perfumery and fragrance formulations, leveraging the unique herbal scent characteristics of the material.

Occurrence, Applicability & Potential Uses

Ruta graveolens, commonly referred to as rue, is a medicinal and ornamental herb native to the Mediterranean basin. The herb tincture is extracted from the aerial parts of the plant. Its primary use is as a fragrance agent within perfumery and related cosmetic products. Under the International Fragrance Association (IFRA) (Global) standards, the tincture is subject to phototoxicity restrictions due to the presence of compounds such as bergapten (5-methoxypsoralen), requiring limited concentration levels in products applied to sunlight-exposed skin. Usage is not recommended for flavoring purposes. The material's botanical origin and traditional harvesting methods influence its availability and quality for industrial applications.

Physico-Chemical Properties Summary

This herb tincture exhibits characteristic physico-chemical properties typical of botanical extracts. It is a liquid preparation containing a complex mixture of organic compounds responsible for its herbal odor profile. The tincture’s solubility and volatility contribute to its efficacy in perfume formulations where herbal notes are desired. While comprehensive toxicity data, including oral, dermal, and inhalation routes, have not been fully determined, regulatory reviews indicate low acute hazard classifications. The tincture contains phototoxic constituents, necessitating adherence to concentration limits in finished products exposed to UV light. Its chemical complexity requires careful formulation to maintain stability and olfactory integrity in diverse mixtures.

FAQ

What is Ruta graveolens herb tincture and what are its main characteristics?
Ruta graveolens herb tincture is an extract obtained from the rue herb, known for its distinctive herbal scent. It serves mainly as a fragrance agent in perfumery and related products. The tincture carries synonyms such as rue tincture and herb-of-grace tincture and is recognized chemically by CAS number 84929-47-5. It is composed of complex organic compounds that confer its characteristic odor and requires careful handling due to phototoxic constituents.
Where does Ruta graveolens herb tincture originate and how is it used in formulations?
The tincture is derived from the aerial parts of the Ruta graveolens plant, a Mediterranean herb traditionally cultivated for its aromatic properties. It is extracted using solvents to obtain a liquid with herbal olfactive notes. Its usage primarily lies within fragrance applications where herbal scent profiles are required. IFRA (Global) guidelines govern its safe application due to phototoxicity concerns, restricting its concentration in products especially those exposed to sunlight. The tincture is not recommended for flavoring uses.
What safety regulations and sourcing standards apply to Ruta graveolens herb tincture?
Ruta graveolens herb tincture is regulated under the IFRA (Global) Code of Practice due to phototoxicity risks associated with compounds such as bergapten. The maximum allowable concentration in consumer products is limited to 0.0015% bergapten content on skin-exposed areas, excluding rinse-off products. Regulatory bodies have not classified the tincture as hazardous under OSHA standards. It is classified with a water hazard class (WGK) of 2 in Germany, indicating moderate environmental risk. Sourcing is based on botanical extraction from cultivated rue herb, with quality controlled to comply with chemical registries such as REACH (EU).

IFRA fragrance material specification:
Where the bergapten (5-methoxypsoralen) content of all relevant oils present in a compound has been determined, it is recommended that for applications on areas of skin exposed to sunshine, excluding bath preparations, soaps and other products which are washed off the skin, the total level of bergapten in the consumer products should not exceed 0.0015% (15 ppm). This is equivalent to 0.0075% (75 ppm) in a fragrance compound used at 20% in the consumer product. Where the level of bergapten has not been determined by appropriate methods, the limits specified in the guidelines on individual oils should apply. In those cases, where such oils are used in combination with other phototoxic ingredients, the additive effect has to be taken into consideration and the use levels have to be reduced accordingly. The sum of the concentrations of all phototoxic fragrance ingredients, expressed in % of their recommended maximum level in the consumer product, shall not exceed 100.
